In observance of National Chocolate Covered Cherries Day (for real)…..
Most people have heard the phrase, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what your gonna get,” from the movie Forrest Gump. I guess you could say that it wasn’t true if you got a box of chocolate covered cherries, right? Each bite would reveal the same succulent confectionary filled cherry as the maraschino juice rolls down your chin. I have always opted to just pop the whole thing in my mouth and try to keep the juice from oozing out my pursed lips as I awkwardly chewed. Those things are downright messy!
My saying would be “Life is like a box of chocolate covered cherries, sweet but messy”. Perhaps if we enjoyed life with its messes the way we enjoy a chocolate covered cherry than we could be joyful through our trials. Almost every mess or turmoil we face can be traced back to something that was great. I wouldn’t have to deal with the death of my firstborn son if he had not been fabulously born in the first place. I wouldn’t have miscarried a baby on Christmas day 17 years ago, or suffered a difficult pregnancy nearly losing my youngest son, or bury my last child that had died only halfway through my pregnancy if it had not been for having 6 beautiful children occupy my womb before them. Even if I had miscarried my first child it would not have happened if not for having a man that loved me. Most times that we lose something it hurts the most the more that it sweetened our lives.
The ONLY thing sweeter than life itself is THE WORD OF GOD. Psalm 119:103 says “How sweet are your words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”. Here in the South, we know how to make SWEET ICED TEA. That is the way tea was meant to be. The reason we put sweetener in it is that tea naturally has a bitter taste (I guess some people like it that way – yuck). Well, sometimes life can get bitter. If you want the bitterness of life to be sweetened enough to drink it up, READ GOD’s WORD!
Maybe you don’t like chocolate covered cherries so think of something sweet but messy like caramel apples, cotton candy, a dipped ice cream cone on a hot day, you pick it. Life is like that. Even though we know that it is messy we tackle it anyways because it is worth it. Well, LIFE is worth it. I will admit that there have been times that I wished I could just check out when things got bad but I am so glad that I didn’t. The sweet Word of God has never failed to comfort me in times of messes and troubles.
If you ever get depressed or just plain discouraged go get yourself a messy treat and chill out. If you made a New Year resolution to eat healthily, please don’t let me make you fall off of the wagon. Eat a HEALTHY messy treat like a peach or slice of watermelon. But if you are like me and gave up yesterday on the healthy eating thing already and if you have not had any chocolate covered cherries in a while, go out and grab some (or order some below) because today is National Chocolate Covered Cherries Day. ( #ChocolateCoveredCherryDay ) . As a new twist, I have added a video for the “Morsel of the Story” recipe below where you can meet me in my kitchen. See you there. Till then…
